Generally, we tend to say an addiction is the necessity developed by an organism towards a situation, an object, or a substance, to experience its effects, and whose physical presence is required to continue functioning (Secretaría de salud, (2002), Estados Unidos Mexicanos.) Addictions may be classified into two categories:
Direct: Substance consumption provokes dependence in the organism.
Examples: Tobacco, alcohol, and cocaine.
Indirect: The use of the object generates satisfaction or pleasure.
Examples: Computers, gambling, and sex.
What do different types of addictions have in common?
Independently of the subject and the duration of the addiction, all kinds of addictions posses a common characteristic, this is their development in a social environment. This means that interaction with others is required for an addiction to exist, being addictions inherently social.
Why are addictions social?
Addictions are social because they can develop due to the availability of a setting where people are in charge of promoting addictive conducts. Therefore, society as a whole acts as a means that makes the existence of all kinds of addictions possible, and this is clearly evidenced by the existence of bars, clubs and casinos.
How are we affected by the media?
Mass media is a crucial aspect for the promotion of addictions, considering they can generate a setting that transmits and informs about addictions. However, this can be problematic as the information portrayed is not always adequate; because the message often conveys that addictions are normal and that there is nothing wrong about them.
Although all humans live in society, not everyone is an addict and there are many reasons for this. Some individuals possess greater genetic vulnerabilities towards addictions; on the other hand upbringing and moral and ethical values play a substantial role in the outcome.
Finally, it is fundamental to note that not only addicts suffer from their addiction, but millions of people who are involved in maintaining addictions alive. There are groups of people with the common interest of keeping and supplying addictions for a long time, causing immeasurable pain to humanity.
